What are Dedicated Servers

A dedicated server is a type of internet hosting where the client leases an entire server that is not shared with anyone. This type of hosting is more flexible than shared hosting. The organizations that rents the server has full control over the server(s). Server administration is not provided by didedicated. The dedicated servers is housed in a Data Centers. These are similar to colocation facilities. The Data Center provides redundant power sources (battery and generation) and HVAC systems. Collocation is different from renting a dedicated server. In colocation the server hardware is owned by the customer.

Operating Systems
Customer preference determines which operating system is used on your dedicated servers. Didedicated offers variations of Linux and Microsoft Windows Server software. Operating system support is not include in the services provided by didedicated. You are responsible for updates to the core system and acquiring the latest security fixes, patches, and system-wide vulnerability fixes.

Bandwidth
Bandwidth refers to the data transfer rate or the amount of data that can be carried from one location to another in a given time period (seconds). It is often represented in bits (of data) per second (bit/s). For example, a visitors to your web site, or applications uses bandwidth as the traffic moves from one location to another and vice versa.

Bandwidth Billing
Bandwidth measurements are performed using the 95th percentile method. Didedicated also offers Unmetered or Unmeasured bandwidth. The 95th percentile method uses the line speed, billed on the 95th percentile average or peak usage. This refers to the speed in which data flows from the server or device. An example of 95'th percentile billing would be:

(95th Percentile rate) x (billing cycle length) = Bandwidth usage

OR

Over a 30 day period, a server uses 30GB of traffic. For 28 of these days, the traffic consists of only .5GB/day. The last two days has 8GB/day of traffic (bursting bandwidth). In this case of bursting traffic, the 95th percentile would be around .5GB/day. Using the 95th percentile calculation, the bandwidth charge would be: (.5GB/day) * (30days) = 15GB

Unmetered bandwidth service is where we cap or control the “top line” speed for a server. Top line speed in unmetered bandwidth is the total Mbit/s allocated to the server and configured on the switch level. For example, if you purchase 10 Mbit/s of unmetered bandwidth, the top line speed would be 10 Mbit/s. Unmetered Bandwidth ensures the dedicated server owner will not be charged bandwidth overages. Unmetered bandwidth services incur additional charges.

Why a dedicated server ?
One of the biggest reasons businesses choose dedicated servers is the availability of a high powered network from multiple providers. Since didedicated servers utilize massive amounts of bandwidth, we are able to secure lower volume based pricing to include a multi-provider blend of bandwidth. To achieve the same type of redundancy you would take a large investment in core routers, long term contracts, and expensive monthly bills.

Uptime
Didedicated provides an include service level agreement based on network uptime. We guarantee a 99.9% uptime on our network this equates to 22 minutes and 19 seconds of down time each month. This guarantee is an evolved real life expectation. This down time almost always occurs very late at night and is caused almost always by routine network maintenance or network upgrades.

Redundancy
Higher quality providers like didedicated are multi-homed across multiple quality internet uplinks. These providers in turn, provide significant redundancy in the event one goes down. In addition to improved routes to specific destinations. For information about which provider didedicated uses please see specific information about the data centers.
